PITTSBURGH (WJAC) — Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby reached another milestone Thursday night in the team's overtime victory over the Detroit Red Wings.
Crosby's 1,000th career assist came on Erik Karlsson's game-winning goal.
Crosby is just the 14th player in NHL history to earn 1,000 career assists, and is the seventh fastest to do it.
“It's probably apropos that it's an overtime goal that he gets the assist on,” Penguins Head Coach Mike Sullivan said with a smile. “I think this one is a huge milestone. There’s not too many guys that get 1,000 assists.”
Crosby's three-point night also propelled him into the top 10 on the NHL's all-time scoring list.
“Think about that for a second,” Sullivan said. “It puts him in really elite company. The milestones he's achieving now, they're self-explanatory.”
The Penguins' 6-5 victory over the Red Wings put them back in a playoff spot, with just three games remaining in the regular season.
